Objective The applicability of ISO natural gas analysis standards on coalbed methane(CBM) needs to be confirmed while accelerate international standardization on this area.
Methods Based on the analysis of the gas quality of CBM, combined with the benchmarking analysis of the relevant standards for natural gas analysis and testing formulated by ISO/TC 193, the applicability of ISO natural gas analysis standards applied in CBM analysis is studied.
Results For most of the quality designation of CBM, ISO natural gas analysis and test standards are suitable for the analysis of CBM. However, the contents of nitrogen, carbon dioxide and oxygen in coalbed methane may exceed the application range of some natural gas related analysis and test standards, which needs to be revised to further meet the needs of coalbed methane analysis and test. In addition, ISO has not formed relevant standards for the determination of particulate matter which has a great influence on the production, supply, storage and marketing of coalbed methane.
Conclusions It is advisable to formulate relevant international standard technical reports, clarify the applicability of relevant standards, and further develop international standard formulation and revision work to improve the coverage rate of the quality designation of CBM.
