Dissolution mechanism and properties of solubilizing modified hydrophobic association polymer

  • Objective The solubility of hydrophobic association polymer restricts its application in oil and gas exploitation. In order to meet the needs of oil and gas exploitation and achieve low cost, the hydrophobic association polymer APO was developed, and the solubility modification of the polymer was realized by host guest inclusion technology.
    Methods The performance of hydrophobic association polymer APO can be improved through the design of polymer structure.APO was synthesized by free radical aqueous solution polymerization using AM, AMPS, and OEMA as raw materials, and the unique cavity structure of β-cyclodextrin was used to improve its solubility by host and guest package cooperation.
    Results Under β-cyclodextrin to APO ratio of 2∶1 the dissolution time was reduced from 85 min to 45 min at 25 ℃, and the particle size of APO was reduced by 19.59% and 11.50% in monovalent and divalent saline, respectively.
    Conclusions The polymer has good salt resistance, β-cyclodextrin can promote the solubility of APO, reduce the amount of polymer, and realize the low cost of oil and gas extraction.
